Who we are
Attachment Preview is a Chrome extension published by 8 O'Clock LLC. It lets you preview Gmail attachments without downloading them. This policy covers the extension and this website.
The short version
- The extension collects nothing. No account, no analytics, no ads, no tracking, and no servers of ours.
- Attachments are shown on your screen, in your browser, and nowhere else.
- The only thing the extension stores is a small counter in the extension's own local storage on your device, used to decide when to show a one-time request to rate the extension. It is never sent anywhere and is deleted when you remove the extension.
What the extension does with your attachments
When you click Preview (PDFs and images) or Open in new tab (other files), the extension asks Gmail for that one attachment, using your existing Gmail sign-in in your browser.
- PDFs and images load into a viewer that opens on top of Gmail, in opened emails and in compose, reply and forward. The file is held in your browser's memory only while the viewer is open and is discarded when you close it. It is not saved to your computer.
- Other files open in a new browser tab at Gmail's own address for that attachment. Types your browser can display (for example text files) are shown in the tab. Types it cannot display (for example Word or Excel files) are downloaded by your browser, just as they would be from Gmail.
- Gmail may deliver the file from Google's attachment server,
mail-attachment.googleusercontent.com. The extension contacts only Gmail and that Google address, and only for the attachment you clicked. - The PDF viewer (Mozilla's open-source pdf.js) is bundled inside the extension. No code is downloaded from the internet.
- The extension does not read, change or send your email messages. It only looks at the attachment list on the page so it can add its buttons.
- A PDF password is used only in your browser to open that file and is never stored, logged, or transmitted.
What the extension stores
To decide when to ask (once, at most twice) whether you would like to rate the extension, it keeps a small record in the extension's own local storage in Chrome (chrome.storage.local, not synced, on your device only), under the name gap.ratePrompt.v1. It contains:
- when the extension first ran,
- how many attachments it has previewed successfully and on which days (dates only),
- whether and when the rating request was shown, and your answer (rate, not now, don't ask again).
It contains no file names, no email content, no addresses and nothing about who you are. It is never sent anywhere. Removing the extension deletes the record with it. It is not kept in Gmail's page storage, so clearing site data for mail.google.com does not remove it.
What we collect
Nothing. We do not collect, receive, log or transmit any personal information, email content, attachments, browsing activity or usage statistics, because the extension never sends anything to us or to anyone else.
Sharing and selling
We do not sell, rent or share any data, because we do not have any.
Permissions
- mail.google.com: to add the Preview and Open in new tab buttons in Gmail and to load the attachment you clicked.
- mail-attachment.googleusercontent.com: the Google address Gmail uses to deliver attachment files. Used only to load the attachment you clicked.
- Storage: to keep the small rating record described above in the extension's own local storage on your device (
chrome.storage.local). It is never sent anywhere. Chrome shows no install warning for this permission.
